A WORLD OF RED & WHITE 

  What a delight to join Marian's blog hop on Opposites Attract. She challenged us to stitch projects using two, three at most contrasting colors. 

Red and White were my choices. I began by pulling reds  from my stash. Since it was snowing on April 16 nature provided the perfect white chilliness. RED is a color associated with heat, passion, activity, anger, joy and love while WHITE has been defined as a color without hue, a sign of innocence, of goodness, of cleanliness, of light and neutrality and a sign of purity.

There are so many variations of red. This simple nine patch block stitched into a delightful table covering for tea. 

I took this picture on June 7. From the same deck that the snow picture was taken back in April. A beautiful, warm sunny Sunday. Great for sitting out. 

Nothing is prettier in red and white than our Canadian flag. A new flag print was a must buy. Bordering red crazy hearts it will be a perfect accessory for July 1 Canada Day celebrations.

I added a third color, shades of brown, to this banner. It is a All People Quilt pattern - Sidewalk Cafe - which was on my "to do" for a long time. 

My intention to add a red applique name above Cafe disappeared when I saw the latest fabric with license plate names for the 2016 Row By Row.  The words were perfect and it does have a cheerful red bird nesting above "Happy".

I am stitching the Pat Sloan's Splendid Sampler using random scraps. So I will now have cheerful red blocks in the quilt.

This is one of the earliest patterns I made from a magazine many years ago. It is red squares with white lace corner pockets. We use it in our church at Mothers Day where we ask if anyone wishes to include names of mothers, those with us or those gone before, they will be honored on their special day with prayers. When I stitched this I never imagined it would be used this way. 

An ideal day to see the world in red and white.

So brew a cuppa and visit all the creative ladies as they explore the attraction of opposites.

Only Quilters can stretch an International Quilting Day into a week. The wonderful Marian of Seams To Be Sew has gathered a whole bunch of Qwazy Quilters to share their joy.

We were asked to share what inspired us, our first projects and why we love quilting. 

These lovely ladies - my mother and her 5 sisters - were a constant in my life and an inspiration. They were hard workers who loved to talk, laugh and a have good cuppa tea. They were all sewers and all stitched quilts. I remember being very young and stitching on a treadle machine when one of them dropped in on my mother and asked why she was letting me use the machine because I might stitch the needle in my finger. Her reply was "how else is she going to learn". I don't remember pricking my finger and I was always at the machine.

They stitched quilts for babies, brides,  family members, celebrations and community fundraisers but primarily for warmth  and coziness. Their early quilt fabric would be leftovers from old clothing or garments they stitched. Nothing went to waste.

When my mother turned 75 we surprised her with a quilt created by blocks contributed by family and friends. It became one of her treasures and she spent many hours looking at the blocks. But it was 'too good to use' so had an honored place hanging on the wall for all to see. 

Each block was different and had special memories.

In her stash my mother had a lot of embroidered umbrella ladies. These became a quilt for her youngest granddaughter.

We make Graduation Quilts for our nieces and nephews. One of the ladies became a special block in another Granddaughter's quilt as she left high school last year.

The aunts were always creating.

This Dresden Plate is one of my favorite earlier quilts. It is showing its age. Our fabric choices mature and today we would never use so much polyester. 

           This is a music quilt stitched for my musical brother.              Took me a while to collect all the right notes. 

Perfect cabin quilt for another brother.

This is my special quilt. Not fancy but so many memories because it was made from my mother's house dresses after she left us. Lives in this little shed my brothers built last year. I call it a "Stitching Shed". A little bit of heaven on the Bras d'Or.

It was so hard to choose a topic to be nutty about because there are so many areas which would fill the bill.

I decided to be nutty about tea things.

Found these cute paper-pieced Mug O'Love mug rug patterns at SewHooked.com. And sewing fabric goes perfectly with tea.

A teapot fabric hiding in the stash stitched into a cheerful slightly funky table runner.

The January block, A Touch of Fun, from Victoriana Quilt Designs 2016 quilt was called Hot Chocolate. Could not resist so I was nutty enough to begin another BOM.

A frosty morning,  A warm pot of tea,

 A bit of stitching, Oh cozy me.

There are treasures on the pages of old magazines. I raided my collection of old handkerchiefs to create this cushion. Found the pattern in Creating Country Threads (Vol 10 No 10)

A teacup panel that I thought was too pretty to cut became a sweet centerpiece. Am I the only one who has a hard job cutting fabric until the perfect project comes along?

And who cannot be nuts about the sweet pattern of Hugging & Kissing Penguins offered as a gift by Marian of SeamsTo Be Sew on February 4. I still need to applique the edges.
